Same Love?

One can’t talk about social issues and not touch on what might possibly be the most debated topic in modern era.

In Singapore, the technical term is “Section 377A of the Penal Code “. Elsewhere, it’s simply put as ‘Gay Rights’. This was originally intended to be a post about the 2 sides of the Gay Rights debate. Of course, the first thing I had to do was look up the exact words of Section 377A, which stated

“Any male person who, in public or private, commits, or abets the commission of, or procures or attempts to procure the commission by any male person of, any act of gross indecency with another male person, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 2 years.”

For the fun of it, I kept on reading… 376A… 377… 377B… It slowly stopped being a matter of gay rights for me and started being a matter of sexuality acceptance.

Before I continue, what follows might be taboo to some readers and might even be considered disturbing and difficult to digest. It took me a while to decide on whether I should even post this. But in the spirit of a fresh, new perspective, there was no doubt that I had to share this. Additionally, an article that looks to start circulating around Facebook has intrigued me – It Begins: Pedophiles Call for Same Rights as Homosexuals.

Homosexuality is still a taboo in many people’s minds, but there are other things that some people have shown love to in society. They may show it wrongly, but nonetheless, it exists. Pedophilia, bestiality and necrophilia – words that have been shunned in society due to how these feelings are expressed, through what can portrayed as abuse and disrespect .

The more common and still human-related one is pedophilia. Paedophilia, or Pedophilia, the usual reaction is like its name, always leaning one 2 edges – Intense Fury or Disturbed Silence. Either way, it’s negative. DON’T GET ME WRONG. No one likes it when children are abused.

BUT, think about this for a moment:

Heterosexuality – Sexual Interest in the opposite sex. Does rape exist? Yes. It’s called rape.
Homosexuality – Sexual Interest in the same sex. Does rape exist? Yes. It’s called rape or sodomy
Pedophilia – Sexual Interest in prepubescent children. Does rape exist? Yes. It’s called child sex abuse or often wrongly, pedophilia.

“Pedophilia is a sexual orientation and unlikely to change. Treatment aims to enable someone to resist acting on his sexual urges.”
– Harvard Health Publications, July 2010

Now, pedophilia can even be split up into Hebephilia (11-14 years)  and Ephebophilia (15-19 years) so clearly, there’s a whole pedo-universe to explore, but then again, the surface is a mystery on its own. If you consider alternate sexualities such as homosexuality okay, and rape wrong, then please, spare a thought for the definition of pedophilia before using a word that could be offensive to relavent parties. A heterosexual for example, would love some time with a member of the opposite sex, but would understand that rape is wrong. Same with pedophiles, it is simply a matter of the desired target.

Currently, Germany has the world’s first government funded initiative aimed at the prevention of sex offences against minors, by working with men before they offend and you’ll also be glad that many are voluntarily in treatment because they do not wish to offend. Additionally, as the article I referenced earlier, it also mentions how “Potential sex offenders use child pornography as a substitute for sex against children.”

As the argument for homosexuality often goes – ‘They’re humans too.’ Pedophiles, BEING HUMANS, would also understand the fact that any form of sexual abuse is wrong and often, it is the social stresses put onto them they might drive them to commit the horrid crimes in the first place.

At the rate the taboos are going, society is being hypocritical by indirectly causing the sexual abuse of children, simply because they want to put a stop to it. Call it a sexuality, call it an illness – it still exists, and we cannot let it escalate into something harmful.
